What are fracking plugs and what are they used for
Brief Introduction to the Fracking Plug. Fracking has been around for half a century. The process is really quite simple. Make a hole. Enlarge the hole by adding connections to multiple, small spaces. Use plugs to control the extension of that connection network. Catch what escapes. This is very superficial, so let’s take a more detailed look.
Driving Force Behind Oil and Gas Recovery. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that we used 97.7 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) last year. Only 11% of that energy came from renewable sources. The balance--petroleum, natural gas, coal, and nuclear--accounted for the remaining 89%, all resources dependent on their extraction from the earth. Two-thirds of all power was derived from petroleum (37%) or natural gas (29%).
Oil and Gas “Pockets.” In the middle of the 1800s, George Bissell and Edwin L. Drake developed the “drilling rig” at Oil Creek by Titusville, Pennsylvania. They tapped into easily accessible oil. Gas was there too, and it continues to be associated with oil, but gas may be found apart from measurable oil deposits. Both gas and oil have seeped into the biosphere for thousands of years, but it has been our desire for oil and gas in the last two centuries that has created a science for defining where these resources lie and how they can be effectively extracted. The "fracking plug" is part of that science.
Seeking Oil and Gas. Modern imaging of rock layers and boring samples are mechanisms for understanding where deposits of oil and gas reside. Oil geologists have always studied the land’s surface features, the rocks, the soil, and boring samples to get a sense of what lies beneath. Today, seismic imaging and satellite images have become added to the geologist’s tool box. Measures of the gravitational field, magnetic field, and electronics capable of “smelling” hydrocarbons assist in determining where to drill to extract oil and gas.
Defining Fracking. Essentially, from a surface perspective, a well penetrates the earth’s crust to the layer of suspected oil. Classically, the “gusher” was the result, the earth’s pressure forcing the liquid up the well. At some point, the pressure would be released and formal pumping would commence. In the natural history of an oil well, at “its old age” the well would fail to yield enough oil or gas to pay for the costs of operation or further developing the well.
From a subterranean perspective, the ideal well seeks a space within the rock strata where the oil is “pooled.” When rock holds oil or gas in a porous rock material, the well may be unable to access more than a small portion of that material. Halliburton developed a process for connecting the individual areas of oil- or gas-yielding rock. Essentially, “hydraulic fracturing” (aka “fracking”) was invented in the mid-20th century when water and sand along with chemicals were introduced directly into a Kansas oil well casing. The pressurized fluid ended up in rock layers holding the oil and gas. The aim was to cause fissures in the subterranean rock structures and allow the individual little spaces to connect directly with each other. The process worked and allowed marginal wells to become functional.
Moreover, well drilling technology was developed in the same time frame so that well drilling could be horizontal as well as vertical, allowing an aiming mechanism to place the fracking process in a narrowly focused region beneath the earth. In addition, multiple points could be drilled horizontally off the main well casing. The process has caught on and resulted in refurbishing old, formerly dry wells, and the opening of new endeavors from the Dakotas to the Balkans.
The Fracking Plug—Managing Crude Access. Fracking is not a simple procedure, and it is a definite process with multiple steps. Shields, guards, valves, or “plugs” isolate various subsections of the well, both in the main vertical drill and in the horizontal portions lying within an identified vein holding oil or gas. This allows selective fracturing of rock strata and control of any potential flow of gas and oil. Each fracking point is technically in isolation from adjacent fracking sites in the same well.
Governmental Footprint. Fracking is limited to the deeper sections of the earth, areas far deeper than our surface water tables. The goal is to avoid all potential contamination of surface waters. Horizontal drilling has reduced the induced fracking to limited, specific horizontal structures. It is directional in terms of the compass. Wells, in terms of the Williston Basin, for example, are lined with casing from the earth’s surface to the strata holding oil or gas. Fracking is limited to that deep stratum, well below the surface waters and the formations that hold them.
A Few Key Terms. We are talking about "frac plugs." A Google search will identify such devices as “composite frac plugs,” “drill composite frac plugs,” “bridge plugs,” plugs designed according to drill speed or drill diameter, guaranteed control over a given pressure to be resisted, etc. Plug designs may differ and size may be significant depending on the application, but a fracking plug’s purpose is to isolate fracking to where sand and water is being injected and to limit them to one specific point at a time. A given well may use multiple plugs to control the rock fracturing process and extent.
• “Cement liners” are not frac plugs, but plugs can be inserted and function because the drill casing is reinforced with cement lining. The technique is called “plug-and-perf.” A wireline attached to a “bridge plug” is inserted into the casing, the plug set, and the area so-isolated is perforated. That plug is removed and injection material is introduced. A “set plug” or “ball-activate plug” allows injected fluids into the formation. The process continues as the horizontal line is extended.
• “Openhole completion” is simplistic in these days of multiple site fracking along a well’s deeper components. A single plug is used with this technique and control of the fracking process is limited.
• “Uncemented perforated liners" may be inserted into the borehole. It allows the use of “ball sealers,” “proppant slugs,” or “fibers.” A “perforation gun” is lowered into the wellbore and fired. Areas immediately adjacent allow injection fluids to enter into the rock formation. This procedure may employ multiple charges and is termed “positive annular isolation.” It may utilize “swell packers” in multiple intervals. Inserted swell packers are inserted downhole and allowed to swell in place. Pre-perforated liners allow the use of “multistage frac-sleeve systems” with plug-and-perf technology.
• “Mechanical isolators” or “ball-actuated sliding sleeves” are inserted inside liner or directly into an open hole. Ported sleeves isolate packers in a “string line,” allowing staging of packers along a horizontal drill line. A ball introduced into fluid injected into the well seats itself in a mechanical sleeve, causing it to open its ports and permit penetration of fluid into the fracking zone. Multiple ball sizes allow progressive sleeve operation. Material generated at the frac are returned to the surface. Balls not retrieved in backflow may be drilled out via “coiled tubing.”
