What is Rubber Injection Molding
Injection molding is a manufacturing process intended for the molding of plastics, injection molding of rubber began in the mid 1960s. Rubber injection molding successfully alters the process by heating the rubber and placing it under significantly more pressure per square inch of cavity surface in molding. This is different from the plastic injection molding process where the materials are cooled under less pressure. Through various innovations, injection molding has become one of the most efficient ways to create custom molded rubber products.
What is Injection Molding?
Silicone and Rubber Injection Molding
The process of injection molding starts with efficient material preparation. To begin, the material is mixed in bulk and then stripped into continuous strips in approximately size of 2" wide & 0.5". These strips are then fed into a screw which, in turn, fills a barrel with the appropriate amount of rubber material. The barrel and injection process creates a very precise, controlled manufacturing process for lean manufacturing thereby making this a very cost competitive manufacturing process here in our USA manufacturing facility. Our largest injection presses shoot up to 15 pounds of rubber for each cycle.
Advantages of injection molding:
Advantages of injection molding:
- The complete elimination of pre-forms. The production and need for pre-forms is a labor intensive step that can potentially affect the finished product through variability in pre-form weight and shape.
- We buy truckloads of mixed and stripped rubber per year, giving us cost advantages that no other custom molders have in conjunction with our in house tooling design and custom rubber tooling cutting on our state of the art CNCs
- Elimination of operator placement of pre-forms. Since pre-forms are eliminated, the need for operators to place the pre-forms in a cavity (compression molding) or pot (transfer molding) is removed.
- Injection screw pre-heats material before forcing it into cavities. We control this temperature process of the complete injection molding process to just plus or minus a few degrees so that each part has the exact same curing and pressure conditions to ensure the consistent lean manufacturing process needed for your custom molded rubber parts. This process decreases the viscosity of the material, allowing it to flow more easily into the mold cavities. Pre-heating provides the potential for decreased cure times through more rapid cavity filling due to lower viscosity.
- Reduced cycle time
- Controlled Flash
- Economical process for high volumes of medium to high precision components
- Capable of producing overmolded components
- Minimal material waste

- Injection molding is a process that was originally intended for plastics. However, in the 1960's, the process was adapted to use rubber and silicone. First, custom tooling has to be made. This is typically a metal cavity that will act as a mold for the material. Then the material is sourced, stripped, and heated as its forced into the cavity via injection. The material is then cooled under a large amount of pressure to create the end product and it's removed from the tooling.
- A major factor in reducing cost and performing injection molding effectively is to properly prepare the material. By doing this, the material can be used extremely efficiently and very little waste is produced.
Custom Injection Molding of Rubber
- With fifty years of experience perfecting the mixing of materials, tooling, molding, and manufacturing process, we can create NBR to metal bonded, EPDM to metal bonded, and FKM to metal bonded items with efficiency and quality in mind.
- Our injection molding process removes any need for pre-forms. Pre-forms are time consuming, they rely on costly labor, and they can lead to inaccuracies in the end product due to the weight and volume of the pre-form being different than that of the finished product.
- There's no need for heating the material separately with our injection process. The injection screw we use heats the material as its being processed. This allows us to maintain a consistent temperature throughout the entire process and the curing process can be exactly the same for each individual piece. This level of consistency is unmatched by our competitors.
- We purchase our material in bulk annually to lower our production costs. This gives us an unparalleled pricing advantage that we can pass down to our customers.

What Type of Elastomers Do We Work With?
We offer injection molding services for many types of elastomers, such as:
Elastomers are versatile materials that can be created in different ways. We can create soft, deformable components that need to have some flexibility. Our company can also mold elastomers into sturdier items like you would expect in tires. If your project is in need of an elastomer attached to metal, we offer rubber to metal bonded, EPDM to metal bonded, nitrile nbr to metal bonded, and other bonding services.
Industries
Some of the industries we provide services for include:
Elastomers are common materials needed in these industries as different as they may seem.
Custom Services
We offer custom tooling and custom injection molding services. It usually takes us a few days to make custom tools for prototypes and 2-5 weeks for custom production tools. How long it takes depends on your project's complexity and cavity count. We are willing to accept high volume and low volume production orders.
Other types of injection molded components we can create include nbr to metal bonded, fkm to metal bonded, and rubber to metal bonded items. Our plant has multiple modern injection presses to meet your specific project.
Benefits of Injection Molding for Elastomers
Fast compared to other processes - Elastomer injection molding is faster than other processes because we preheat the material before pouring it in molds. If you're in need of high volume injection molding, we got you covered as our plant stays open 24 x 7 x 365.
No pre-forms - Processes that require pre-forms not only take longer but can affect weight and shape of the final product.
No need for operator placement - Because pre-forms aren't needed in elastomer injection molding, we don't need operators either.
Less material waste - This molding process doesn't produce as much waste as other processes.
Overmolded possibilities - We can create overmolded products with elastomer injection molding.
Economical - Injection molding of elastomers is economical, especially for businesses that need high volume.
Fewer problems with flash - In manufacturing, flash is a term used to describe when material leaks out of a mold. Once the mold has solidified, flash usually needs to be removed for a satisfactory finished product. Elastomer injection molding has fewer problems with flash than other molding methods.
Because our plant operates 24/7 all days of the year with all processes handled in-house, we are an ideal choice for your high volume injection molding needs. Even if you have low volume orders, we complete them quickly for you without sacrificing quality. We strive to have orders shipped out within 1-10 days.
